Why this needs a specialist
Lead is a cumulative neurotoxin. Disturbed by sanding, scraping, or heat it releases invisible dust that accumulates in the body. Children and pregnant women are most at risk. Incorrect removal can contaminate an entire property.
Most general contractors are not equipped to handle lead paint properly. We are. Every team member works to AS/NZS 4361.1-2017 procedures with full PPE, HEPA-filtered extraction, and sealed containment.
Our method
We use mechanical paint shaving with HEPA vacuum extraction on large flat surfaces (weatherboards, walls), combined with wet chemical stripping using water-based, methylene-chloride-free solvents for joinery and detail work. Sanding is only carried out after all lead paint layers have been fully removed, purely to smooth the timber surface for finishing. At this stage, in line with WorkSafe NZ guidelines, we use wet sanding methods and/or power sanding equipment fitted with HEPA vacuum extraction to suppress and contain any residual dust. Full PPE and sealed containment remain in place throughout. No open-flame heat guns. No methylene chloride.
Our testing and documentation process
We test at each stage of removal to confirm full and proper elimination of lead from the surface. Every test is recorded with the date, location, and photographs — giving you a documented evidence trail of the entire process. We follow WorkSafe NZ regulations and AS/NZS 4361.1-2017 procedures throughout.
Note: we do not issue formal third-party clearance certificates. If your lender, insurer or property manager requires an independent clearance report, we recommend engaging a licensed building inspector or occupational hygienist alongside our work. We can recommend contacts.
